I don’t know what’s cooler... actually taking photos for a mermaid and her man or being the first one @tnguyen_ thought of for couples photos when she got the tail! .
Major props to Nick for carrying Tiffany around the beach (having a fin can be tough for moving around on land) and also for getting completely soaked on this shoot! You two make my heart so happy ❤️❤️

Let’s talk about light ☀️

Light is hands down the most important aspect of a session to me. I’m not saying that I always need beautiful golden hour lighting (though that would be nice…), but finding good light is what it’s all about for me.
.
I used to get lucky. Some sessions would be so easy to edit, while some would challenge me beyond belief. I would pick a background and shoot with it no matter what. All I knew was to look for shade or plan for sunset. Now I know a little more… .
Backlighting: This has quickly become one of my absolute favorite lighting situations. Not only do I avoid harsh highlights on my subjects faces, but it helps my subjects to glow. All I have to do is place the sun somewhere behind my subject or diffuse it through a tree and I have beautiful light. (When in doubt, put the sun behind your subject, even if it isn’t golden hour!)

Dynamic light in shade: Not all shade is created equal. Paying attention to natural reflectors (i.e. a light sidewalk) can help you determine whether that shade is dynamic or super flat. Think about what is reflecting light and what is absorbing it. Remember, the closer to the light source you are, the softer the light is - so if you have a beautiful white wall… head on over and use that nice light reflecting off of it.

Colors: Wow, this was something I didn’t notice until the grass turned green this spring.. (I know, I’m late to the game!). Bright colors can reflect funny colors on your subject. If you’re in a grassy field, the skin tone on your subject might be a little bit green. If you’re working with a couple in bright red shirts, their skin might be a little red. Bright colors reflect like crazy, so it’s SO important to plan ahead to avoid the extra color nightmares in post. •

Something I find SO incredibly important is making the people around me feel comfortable and welcome. I did this in high school, when I did theatre, in my college classes.. you name it. I have always hated feeling uncomfortable in situations, so when I have a leg up on someone new, I always try to reach out.
.
This has most definitely translated to my work as a photographer. My main goal is to put everyone at ease and help get rid of those nerves. I’ve put a lot into education and different workshops and resources to learn how to best do this. While I think this is one of my greatest strengths, I also find that sometimes it can be a weakness. At times, I get so worried about making people feel comfortable that I forget to let them just exist. .
One of my absolute favorite things about working with AJ & Dani was how readily they helped to create beautiful, unique poses and photos. From the beginning, it was clear that we were going to have a good time. These two have so much fun together that I just stepped back a little bit and let them play. They had so many fun (and sometimes silly!) ideas, but this really helped me to step back from my usual, highly curated session to allow their creativity to flow in. To say I’m excited to photograph their wedding in July is an understatement. You guys are going to be blown away by what this gorgeous couple is planning.

Hey friends! Since I’ve had several new followers join my photo journey, I thought it was time to (re)introduce myself. Here we go:

My name is Megan Welker (no, my last name isn’t marvels 😂). I’m a 21 year-old introvert who loves long walks on the beach, saying hello to dogs as often as I can, sleeping in, and using an excessive amount of exclamation marks and smily faces every time I type!!! :) ___
Here are some other things I love:

Working with awesome couples who love exploring nature as much as I do, even if that means climbing into tree and wading through flower fields or running into the (cold) San Franciscan waves in long beautiful dresses.

Traveling with my boyfriend as often as we can! (On the flip side, I also love laying in bed and watching movies with my boyfriend as often as we can too. You need a healthy mix of both, am I right?)

Spending my days with my favorite office mates - my dogs! Fun fact: My dog loves TV, so sometimes I’ll play him doggy videos on youtube while I edit. He’ll sit in my lap and try to lick the screen, but it makes working from home much more fun.

Watching movies and musicals! My boyfriend, Zeke, and I try to go to the movie theatre once a week. We also try to go see a few shows a year. (Les Miserables is my favorite and I’m not ashamed to admit that I know all the lyrics to Hamilton)

Connecting with others. One of my favorite things about photography and Instagram is the community it has brought me. I’m always looking to contribute and encourage others in the community. One of the biggest mistakes that I see brides making when they plan their wedding includes making decisions that are NOT 1000%, completely uniquely them. Sometimes their families want things a certain way or they saw it all over Pinterest so they decide that’s just how it’s done. While there’s nothing wrong with listening to family or borrowing from Pinterest, your gut is also a really great decision maker..

My absolute favorite thing about Priscilla & Colton’s wedding was how much personality was present- especially when it came to Priscilla’s bridal look. When I saw her coming down the stairs to the garden with this huge, beautiful, + unique train, I couldn’t help but smile. When the giant flower bouquet arrived, I think I laughed. These two pieces matched her personality so well and while it’s not the typical bridal look I’ve seen, I think it was beyond perfect for her & she was an absolutely beautiful bride. •
